Description

This easy fried cabbage recipe is a flavorful and comforting side dish featuring crispy bacon, sautéed onions, garlic, and a tangy touch of stone ground mustard. The cabbage is cooked until buttery soft and slightly caramelized, making it a perfect accompaniment to any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables

  • 1 head cabbage, sliced and chopped
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced

Meat

  • 6 pieces bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces

Spices and Condiments

  • 2 tablespoons stone ground mustard (or Dijon mustard)
  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • kosher salt, to taste
  • freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook Bacon: Heat a large pan over medium heat and add the bacon pieces. Cook until crispy, about 6 to 8 minutes, then transfer the bacon to a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Remove some of the bacon grease from the pan, leaving about 2 tablespoons to cook the vegetables.
  2. Sauté Onion: Add the diced onion to the pan and sauté for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onion becomes translucent and soft.
  3. Add Garlic and Spices: Stir in the minced garlic, stone ground mustard, smoked paprika, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Mix well to combine and let it cook for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Cook Cabbage: Place the sliced cabbage into the pan on top of the onion mixture. Use a large spoon or tongs to stir and sauté together for 12 to 15 minutes, allowing the cabbage to become buttery soft and slightly caramelized. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and promote even cooking.
  5. Combine and Serve: Return the crispy bacon pieces to the pan, toss everything together thoroughly, and cook for an additional minute to warm the bacon. Serve hot as a delicious side dish.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, omit the bacon and use olive oil instead of bacon grease.
  • Stone ground mustard adds texture and tang; Dijon mustard can be used as a smoother alternative.
  • Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
  • For extra flavor, add a splash of apple cider vinegar before serving.
  • Ensure the cabbage is sliced evenly for uniform cooking.
