Description

Harry Potter’s Hot Butterbeer is a warm, creamy, and sweet beverage inspired by the magical drink from the wizarding world. Combining rich whole milk, buttery notes, brown sugar sweetness, and the fizzy touch of cream soda, it is perfectly spiced with ginger and a hint of cayenne for a cozy, comforting treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 2-liter cream soda
  • 1 3.4 ounce box Butterscotch Instant Pudding mix
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp ginger paste
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

Optional Toppings

  • Whipped cream or coconut whipped cream
  • Butterscotch sauce or caramel sauce for drizzling
  • Cinnamon and nutmeg for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Combine and whisk ingredients: In a large microwavable bowl, combine 3 cups whole milk, 1/4 cup unsalted butter, and 1/4 cup brown sugar. Whisk thoroughly to combine the ingredients evenly.
  2. Heat mixture: Microwave the milk mixture for 3 minutes. After heating, whisk again until the butter is fully melted and the sugar is completely dissolved.
  3. Add cream soda and pudding: Whisk in half (1 liter) of the cream soda gradually. Then add the entire box of butterscotch instant pudding mix and continue whisking until well combined.
  4. Incorporate flavorings: Add 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, 1/4 teaspoon ginger paste, and 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper to the mixture. Whisk thoroughly to distribute all the flavors evenly.
  5. Add remaining cream soda: Slowly pour in the rest of the cream soda bottle (the remaining 1 liter), stirring to combine gently.
  6. Warm and serve: Warm the combined mixture on the stovetop over low heat or briefly in the microwave, or keep it warm in a crockpot set initially to high then lowered to maintain temperature. Stir occasionally to prevent separation. Pour into mugs when warm.
  7. Optional toppings: Top each cup with whipped cream or coconut whipped cream. Drizzle butterscotch or caramel sauce on top and optionally sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg for extra spice and presentation.

Notes

  • If the butterbeer is too thick, add 1 cup of whole milk and stir to incorporate for desired consistency.
  • The ginger and cayenne provide gentle warmth; increase to 1/2 teaspoon each for a spicier kick.
  • Use whipped cream or coconut whipped cream as a dairy-free alternative for toppings.
  • Sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg for extra cozy comforting spices.
  • Serve with Harry Potter-themed treats like Chocolate Frogs or Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans for a themed party.
  • Store leftovers in a covered container in the refrigerator for 3–4 days.
  • Reheat carefully on the stovetop over low heat while stirring occasionally to maintain texture.
  • Freezing is not recommended as carbonation and dairy won’t freeze or thaw well.
  • Prepare the base mixture (everything except cream soda) up to a day in advance and refrigerate; add cream soda just before serving.
